Dear friends of Memoto,
We started out a year ago to create a new way to look at and experience our lives. During that year, so many of you have gotten in touch to share how you see that Memoto will be of value to you personally, which has been a continued source of motivation and inspiration to our entire team through good times and bad.
Now we find ourselves at a new beginning.
It has taken a long time to get here, but at the end of this month we will be ready to start shipping. It is an incredible relief to be able to make this announcement, and it's not without afterthought because this is still the beginning of something and not the end. We move forward prepared for the hard work ahead to fulfill our commitments to you and to our company-guiding vision.
We start out on this new journey under a new brand. Memoto as a name has been very dear to us, but after being adamantly notified that it conflicts with similar trademarks in the market we have no choice but to change name. This has made us ask ourselves who we really are and what we stand for. The new name we have selected is Narrative.
Narrative feels like the name that was out there waiting for us all along. It encapsulates, crystallizes and clarifies what we have been working on all the way: helping you effortlessly capture and tell the stories of your life. Narrative is the same legal entity as Memoto, with the same obligations to our backers and customers. No matter what we call ourselves, we are the same people in our hearts and souls. Also, the Memoto Lifelogging Camera will now be called the Narrative Clip.
To be clear, this does not mean that we are changing any of our plans for the future. We will stay the course.
We also start out with greatly increased resources to fulfill our plans. After a lot of hard work we have found a team of people with the same outlook on life as ourselves, who believes in what we do while we believe in them. San Francisco-based True Ventures are our new partners on this journey, and with their backing ($3M to be precise) we can confidently reiterate that we are in this for the long haul.
Mark November 1st in your calendars. Starting this date, the first Narrative Clips will leave the factory to be sent to our Kickstarter backers and then pre-order customers. We are working on ways to let you easily access your individual estimated shipping date, so stay tuned to know when the Narrative Clip is arriving at your door.
I can’t express how much we appreciate all your feedback and help. Suiting up into our new Narrative costume, we look very much forward to continuing serving you as we have. In a few weeks we’ll be able to share what we’ve been working on the past 12 months: the Narrative Clip.
Let us know what you think about our new name on our blog.
A: We loved Memoto as a name. But we’ve learned there are existing trademarks that prevent us from registering Memoto as a trademark worldwide. So we have to change to something that we can use globally. When we found out that our number one favorite name Narrative was available it was an easy choice to switch names.
A: Motorola Trademarks Holdings are owners of the trademark “MOTO” and a series of other trademarks to which it belongs. They have expressed their opposition to our use of Memoto and sent us a cease-and-desist letter confronting us with worldwide legal actions if we don’t stop using it. Since we would rather spend our time, energy and money on developing products and running our business than on an insecure legal process, Memoto is changing identity to Narrative during ongoing settlement negotiations.
A: Nothing at all in terms of fulfillment. Instead of ”Memoto”, your camera will be labeled ”Narrative”. Legally, Narrative is the exact same entity as Memoto with the same liabilities to backers and customers.
A: We will call the hardware unit "Narrative Clip". The smartphone apps and the cloud service will simply be called Narrative.
A: No, not at all! The process of the name change has been kept isolated from the production process. We will start shipping Kickstarter rewards and pre-orders on November 1st. And this date wouldn’t have been different had we kept Memoto as a name.
A: No, we are changing names but we are not changing what we plan to do ahead. The new funding helps us fulfill these plans.
